When Walter has to attend a conference in New York, he arrives at his New York apt., and finds Tarek Khalil, a Syrian musician, and Zainab, a Senegalese street vendor living there. When the couple tells him that they have nowhere to go, he sympathizes with the situation of the illegal immigrants and invites the couple to stay with him. Tarek invites him to go to his gig in the Jules Live Jazz and Walter is fascinated with his African drum. Tarek offers to teach Walter to play the drum. Through learning how to play the African drums, Walter discovers a vehicle to express his emotions and is able to heal and create a new life for himself.

A photographer Ben, and his girlfriend Jane are out drinking with friends. On the way home they have a car accident, with Jane hitting a girl. Like the 1951 version, in the 2008 remake, we humans demonstrate our aggression by shooting Klaatu and constantly attacking Gort. As a result, Gort creates a cloud of black smoke that rapidly moves through the air, disintegrating matter and flesh on contact. Only when we are on the brink of destruction, do we see the benefit in changing.
